The BNO was founded for and by designers. The organization includes a General Board, a Supervisory Board, and a Secretariat (office organization) to implement the BNO’s policies. But our members themselves also make a direct strong contribution to how the BNO manifests itself on various fronts. They do so in large numbers through the Activity Platforms. Perhaps this bottom-up involvement is one of the most precious assets of our organization.
The General Board develops policies and oversees their implementation by the Secretariat. Members take votes on these policies and also elect the General Board. In doing so, they have – in addition to the Activity Platforms – a powerful tool to give shape to the policies and activities of the BNO.
The most important task of the Supervisory Board is to assess whether those wishing to become members meet the BNO’s criteria. Moreover, the Supervisory Board makes rulings on members deemed to have transgressed the BNO’s code of conduct. It is possible to appeal against these rulings to the Council of Appeal, which reexamines the case, hears the parties involved and takes a final decision.
