What Design Can Do is looking for a Communications Director to manage our Communications Team in Amsterdam.

About us

What Design Can Do (WDCD) is a platform for the advancement of design as a tool for social change. Since its inception in 2011, WDCD has undertaken numerous activities to promote the role of designers in addressing the world’s most pressing societal and environmental issues. It has done so by showcasing best practices, initiating discussions and facilitating collaboration between disciplines. So far, WDCD has hosted eight successful international design conferences in Amsterdam, and three in São Paulo, Brazil.

Through its print publications, website, blog and social media, WDCD reaches an international community of engaged designers and creatives. Alongside events and publications, WDCD aims to mobilize the creative community by launching and running various design challenges.

In 2018/19 WDCD will be running two challenges, one on Clean Energy in five metropolitan areas (Amsterdam, Mexico City, São Paulo, Nairobi and Delhi) in close collaboration with the Ikea Foundation, and one on the sexual exploitation of children, in close collaboration with the Dutch Public Prosecution Service. Also WDCD will launch its first design event in Mexico City in the spring of 2019.

Your work at WDCD:

You are responsible for:

  • the development of our overall communication strategy, planning and management;

  • financial management of the communication budget;

  • the excellent execution of this strategy, planning and (financial) management;

  • setting and monitoring of marketing and communication goals with regards to the growth of the WDCD community, customer base, partners and affiliates, as well as (ticket) sales, PR, free publicity, online and social marketing and corporate communication;

  • managing the WDCD small communication team with the ambition to grow in the coming year;

  • managing many freelance experts in the field of communication and PR;

  • managing and organizing the collaboration of the communications team with the programme team, the design team, finance and fundraising team;

  • managing and monitoring the activities of our international communication partners in our five focus regions areas (Amsterdam, Mexico City, São Paulo, Nairobi and Delhi).

You are:

  • an experienced Communications expert with a HBO-level degree (or international equivalent);

  • able to work autonomously, but you enjoy working in a team;

  • obviously in possession of excellent communications skills, both written and spoken;

  • digitally savvy; an expert user of various social media platforms;

  • able to draw from a relevant network of experts both in The Netherlands and abroad;

  • familiar with online tools such as WordPress, Mailchimp and Google Analytics;

  • fluent in Dutch, both written and spoken;

  • fluent English, both written and spoken;

  • Spanish or Portuguese would be nice! Not necessary;

  • willing to work at least 4 days a week.

You will be working in a small and dedicated team of creative professionals based in the centre of Amsterdam.
